چکیده

The properties of engineering structures, such as robotic arms, aircrafts or bridges, rely on the properties of the materials used to build them. The internal architecture of the material or microstructure determines its properties and therefore, its study is of great interest for engineers and material scientists. Although there are tools that can provide 2D microstructural information, tools that can be used to obtain 3D characterisations of microstructures for routine analysis are not yet available to material scientists. In this paper we will describe Microconstructor. Microconstructor comprises a genetic algorithm that evolves populations of Cellular Automata inspired by developmental biology that self organise into 3D patterns that can be used for microstructural analysis.

Characterization of mass and swelling of hydrogel microstructures using MEMS resonant mass sensor arrays.

The use of hydrogels for biomedical engineering, and for the development of biologically inspired cellular systems at the microscale, is advancing at a rapid pace. Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) resonant mass sensors enable the mass measurement of a range of materials. The integration of hydrogels onto MEMS resonant mass sensors is demonstrated, and these sensors are used to characterize ...

Investigation of Ca in the Microstructural Evolution and Porosity Analysis of ZK60 Alloy in As-Cast and Extruded Conditions

This research work has been carried out to study the effect of different Ca contents (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0) on the microstructure and porosity content of ZK60 alloys. The samples were examined by using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the modification efficiency of the alloy with different Ca concentrations. The cast specimens were modified, homogenized and extru...

Solution Based Problem Evolution and Problem Inception in Biologically Inspired Design

Biologically inspired design is one of the most important movements in contemporary engineering design. The paradigm entails the use of biological systems as sources of ideas for the design of technological products. Thus, the paradigm, by definition, is based on cross-domain analogies. The movement is pulled by the growing need for sustainable development and pushed by the desire for creative ...

Biologically Inspired Four Elements Compact Antenna Arrays With Enhanced Sensitivity for Direction of Arrival Estimation

A new four elements compact antenna array is presented and discussed to achieve enhanced phase resolution without sacrificing the array output power. This structure inspired by the Ormia Ochracea’s coupled ears. The analogy between this insect acute directional hearing capabilities and the electrically compact antenna array is used to enhance the array sensitivity to direction of arrival estima...

Sol-gel synthesis of (Ca-Ba)TiO3 nanoparticles for bone tissue engineering

Piezoelectric materials are the group of smart materials which have been recently developed for biomedical applications, such as bone tissue engineering. These materials could provide electrical signals with no external source power making them effective for bone remodeling. Between various types of materials, BaTiO3 and CaTiO3 are nontoxic piezoelectric ceramics, which recently have been intro...
